Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is a disorder of the nervous system that causes a substantial decrease in the body’s ability to move its muscles normally. It is a rare disorder, primarily affecting adults, and is characterized by recurrent episodes of muscle rigidity and spasms, often accompanied by intense pain. The cause of the disorder is unknown, but it is believed to be related to an autoimmune response in which the body’s own antibodies attack nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is currently no cure for SPS, but treatments can be used to manage the symptoms.
